Beyond Knowing

MAY 10th,"Beyond Knowing" officially opens to the public! Join us May 24th 5:30PM - 7:30PM for a short, provocative spoken-word performance by Alli Marshall, followed by a lively panel discussion, "Art & Exploration: the Nature of the Search", exploring the themes of the show. The general public is encouraged to attend. We will have a June reception for the show, First Friday, June 7th - save the dates!

“Beyond Knowing” features works by established and emerging Asheville area artists that use art-making as a means of exploring larger questions, such as “Who am I”?, “Why am I here?”. “Where am I headed?”. The paths and mediums of choice are varied, but there is a common thread in the desire to go beyond one’s own ‘comfort zone’ - to extend beyond one’s own limits of understanding. It’s a movement towards objectivity - a stepping outside of oneself. The ability to go beyond those limits might be the result of years of practice and attainment of knowledge by an artist. Or the ability to do so might be the result of a natural tendency in an artist - a constant urge to go beyond one’s own limits of understanding. Another might reach a point at which the only option for going further seems to be a ‘letting go’ of all that one knows - branching directly into new territory with as open a mind and heart as possible. Whatever the case may be, the resulting work has a rich and provocative vitality - not necessarily providing easy answers to the aforementioned questions. In fact, the work might provoke more questions than answers. But, there is an inherent quality in the work that stimulates and provides an opening, perhaps, for the viewer/participant to begin and/or sustain their own search ‘beyond knowing’.
